Back in February I was in contact with NYX about their cruelty free status and to find out more about getting their nail polish in South Africa. I got the heads up that their matte nail polish would hit our stores soon and I am very excited that I finally got my hands on some. First of all, there were so many beautiful colours to choose from and the names are simple, to the point and easy to remember. I have quite a few thought about these polishes but first I am going to show the colours.
NYX matte – Yellow
Everyone knows yellow is tricky. This was probably the easiest yellow I have ever worked with. On the first coat it was almost completely opaque and I had no streaks at all! The second coat when on like butter. Even though yellow might not be my favourtite colour in the world, this one was by far my favourite. I even got compliment while wearing this on it’s own.
NYX matte – Lavender
Lavender is a soft purple. This also went on smooth and flawless. This somehow seemed ‘thinner’ on than the yellow but it was completely gorgeous in the two coats.
NYX matte – Baby Pink
Baby Pink was my favourite colour straight off the bat. EVERYONE knows I love pink and this is extremely similar to Tip Top Melting Marshmallow in shade. Unfortunately this was the one I had the most problems with. It was not a total disaster and I loved it anyway but there was a problem. On the first coat this was quite streaky. My second coat had to be a little bit thicker but it did even out perfectly. I sure do love this soft pink and I can live with the initial streakiness to end up with this beautiful shade!
NYX matte – Red
For some reason I only had one photo of this on it’s own. This is a gorgeous red. It went on like a dream and possibly the only problem with this was that it wasn’t as opaque in two coats. It looks perfect but in a certain light and at a certain angle I could still see some visible nail line. I am sure in three coats this would not be a problem. As I only noticed this after its obvious that it isn’t completely sheer. I don’t often wear red but this is a gorgeous shade.
NYX matte – Chocolate
Isn’t this a beautiful, dark shade perfect for winter? Chocolate looks exactly like chocolate on your nails. This is two coats of perfection. It went on like a dream.
I have to mention a few things about these polishes in general. I love matte polishes. They look absolutely gorgeous and different. I had two concerns with these (before I even used them). I am a firm believer in top coat. I think top coat is essential and really protects your polish. I was concerned about not wearing top coat with this. I was worried that it wouldn’t last and would start chipping soon. I could top coat it with a matte top coat but then what would be the point? That was my second concern. Do I need matte polish if I could just wear a matte top coat and get the same effect? I think in the end, the answer is yes. Of course you can turn any polish into a matte by using a matte top coat but these polishes are just gorgeous and you can’t go wrong with them. As far as lasting power? I wore them all for a good few days and they impressed. This is a photo I took with my cellphone. On day 4 of wearing chocolate I had minimal tip wear. I am also not easy on my polish so this is no small thing.
In order to really see the difference between matte and normal polish I added some polka dots and stripes with regular polish in almost a similar shade. I used NYX Red and NYX Baby Pink.
Here I used Essence – Fame Fatal to add polka dots and stripes. Please excuse my pointer finger, I bashed it against the camera on my to take the photo and didn’t realise how hard it was till after the fact. My lines are also not perfect but you will soon come to realise not much is perfect here on this blog. 😛 Doesn’t it look so pretty to see the two different finishes together?
Here I used Tip Top Melting Marshmallow. For me, these two are exactly the same shade just different finishes. (Yes Heather and Megan, exactly the same shade!!) I think this made it a little harder to see the contrast between the two but it sure is there. I can almost imagine the opposite combination to be perfect too, base of the shiny finished and accented with the matte. Love this shade!!
I think as as exercise I will find similar shades of all these polishes and use a matte top coat. It will be a nice comparison.
In the end, I can honestly say that I loved these polishes. They were almost all perfect and the issues were so minor that it hardly seems worth mentioning. I can’t wait to get my hands on a few more of these and if matte polishes are something you like, then you absolutely have to go out and get them as well.
NYX matte nail polishes are available at selected Clicks stores (I say selected because I have not seen them in all our Clicks stores yet) and are going for R44.95 each.
Did you see anything that caught your eye? I think this range has a colour for everyone. From nudes to brights. I can’t wait to use these in nail art. Another huge bonus, NYX is a cruelty free brand.
PS: Don’t forget that April is giveaway month and you can check out and enter week one here!

Glamorous Glitter
Oh wow, bye bye money in the bank and helooooooo NYX Matte Nail Polish! The pink is by far my fave, but I adore the red and yellow too. Not a fan of the purple (it’s my fave colour) asit looks too shiny! But this is a great, great review! Thank you. 🙂

Hahaha I know what you mean. These are gorgeous. I think the shiny purple is a mistake on my part. I took the photo soon after painting and could’ve waited a bit more. It’s not that shiny at all but go with your gut!
Thanks for the compliment. Glad you liked it and hope it helped.

I like these. I didn’t think I would 🙂 I normally don’t wear polish on my fingers as it starts to chip on day 2. So my knowledge is limited… matte top coat? I didn’t know that you get that! Give more info please! x

Hi Charlene,
I know right! I was quite sceptical before as well because I thought it would just be me using a matte top coat but these really are gorgeous. I was so impressed.
Matte top coat. Oh my goodness!!! Tip Top has one that I am currently using. I believe it has been discontinued though so there are only a few left on the shelves (i picked one up for R6!!! because of that) but I know that other brands are making them too. If you check out my post on Top Coats you will see the bottle there.
Do you use a top coat over your polish? That should prevent chipping (especially so soon). If you do then it might be the brand of polish? I hate chipping!!
CharlieW
I use a base and top coat. Doesn’t matter what brand, polish chips the next day 🙁 It’s almost as though nothing wants to stick to my nails. Not even gel lasts very long. Anyway… Will check out your post and get a matte top coat. Really staring to like this look! Thanks for the info xxx

Oh gosh, that stinks. Just a thought. Have you tried wiping your nails with vinegar before applying polish or base coat? Some people have more natural oils in the nails and any oil on the nail will make the polish come off much faster. Wiping it down with vinegar gets rid of any oil or residue on the nail and will help any polish ‘stick’ better. Good luck! You’re welcome! 🙂

Ah that pink!! So pretty! Formula wise I think the Tip Top is a bit easier to work with but colour wise they are the same. Not that the NYX is bad in any way.
Yes. 😛

Do you know if these polishes are available anywhere else besides Clicks. I’ve tried a few stores, two don’t stock NYX nail polish and the third had them on their shelves for a month before they were recalled. 🙁

Nicola, funny story. After posting about them I spoke to the person at NYX I was dealing with and she mentioned they were released too early. They were only meant to be released in stores by end July/beginning August. It seems some stores were a bit hasty. They WILL be back in stores soon. 😉
Nicola
Hmmm… well that’s both good and bad. I was hoping to put one in my next Bandwagon Box, I’ll just have to look for something else.

Ah poop. Bad timing. I thought they may as well have left them out seeing as they were there already. Sorry. Good luck finding something!! xx
