Magnetic nail polish is not new. I have seen it around for quite a while now. I was never sold on it because I thought it was a ‘fad’, that it would be old before we knew it. Of course, months later it is still everywhere. I still wasn’t sold but last week Nicola on twitter asked me about it and I thought I would give it a try.
I decided to go with the Essence magnetic polish and magnet (of course). The colour I chose on a whim. I wasn’t sure if I loved it but it was the one I liked most while quickly going through bottles on the shelf.
First things first. I absolutely LOVE this colour. I did not expect the gorgeousness of this. This colour is Magic Red Carpet. If you, like me, are not really sure how it all works, let me take you through the process.
Let me go through the instructions first:
On the magnet box:
- Choose any essence magnetic nail polish and apply a thick layer on one nail. It is important to magnetise the nails one by one.
- Put magnet over the forefinger of the other hand.
- Hold magnet approximately 20 seconds close over the wet nail polish. avoid direct contact, if required put your finger into the finger groove of the magnet (with nail side down)
- Within seconds the magnetic pigments start moving as if by magic. Your glamorous nail-styling is finished. Clean magnet with nail polish remover.
It is very important to do this one nail at a time. Make sure your nails are clean then add your base coat on all your nails. Once this is done you can get your magnet ready and pull the polish closer. The essence magnet is hollow (as per step 2) and made so that you can put your finger inside. What I did was I put the magnet on my pointer finger of the hand I was not painting (yet). Then I got ready to paint my nail(s). I started at my pinky finger and painted a thickish coat of polish. I popped the brush back into the bottle and immediately took my finger with the magnet on and placed it over the polished nail. Without touching and as close as possible.
The first 2 times I tried it I ended up touching my wet nail with the magnet. It took that many tries to get the hang of it so don’t give up. This polish also dries super fast so don’t worry about using the magnet and wet nails. In fact, I am pretty sure you don’t even have to pop your finger inside the magnet. It is probably just easier that way.
I must admit the end of step two did not make much sense to me at first. I think I got it but I am not sure what they mean with “nail side down”. Try it and use it in whichever way works for you. Play around. It will most likely take a few tries to get the hang of it. A trick is to get the magnet over the nail as quick as possible.
You can see on my ring finger there is a dark mark in the middle of my nail. When I applied the polish on that one I didn’t even it out well. I was in a bit of a rush to get the magnet on and didn’t think it would make a difference. It did. It was quite thick though and I think that was the problem. I also didn’t level another nail but it was quite a bit of a thinner overlap so it didn’t make any marks. Again, just play around.
I wasn’t sure if I would be interested in this magnetic polish at all or even like it. This one definitely won me over. It’s easy and quick and has a gorgeous effect. This is ideal for someone just starting with nail art or the person who isn’t sure if nail art is for them and just wants to try it out. Even better for the person who doesn’t have much time and just wants to jazz up a normal mani. I think this is brilliant. Well done to whoever sat and played with magnets and nail polish!!
I got both the polish and the magnet from Dischem. The polish was R29.95 and the magnet was R24.95.
What do you think? Have you tried any magnetic polish? I still can’t get over this colour (and just the other day I said I am not a red person 😛 ) If you have any questions please let me know and I will answer as best I can. Don’t forget about the giveaways. Week 1 and week 2 are up!
Thanks for reading!!

Oh I love this!! The colour is really great. Your nails look like something from a magazine. Going to look out for it when I am in Dischem. Xx

Ahhh… you got some, glad to have spurred you on to try it. I like the look of this Essence polish, it doesn’t seem to be as metallic as the Golden Rose one I’ve tried. Plus the magnet looks easier to use.
