I don’t often post on Thursdays but we decided to try out a month of Fitchef and I thought I would share my experience and thoughts with you.
The husband and I decided to give Fitchef a try and after quite a bit of back and forth we each settled on what we wanted to order. First of all, we are both pretty fussy, but in different ways. He doesn’t really like veggies and won’t easily try something different whereas I am just full of nonsense. There is a lot of food I don’t eat. It always makes it hard when trying to follow a strict eating plan. I think the biggest struggle is tomato and cheeses. I am never going to eat cottage cheese or cream cheese unless it combined with something that is probably not healthy to begin with 😉 There are a lot of things I don’t eat. I think I am also very limited in my own imagination and finding new and different ways to make food and combinations to try. With that being said, ordering food that is already prepared could be risky. I do consider myself fussy.
That is one of the reasons I thought I would share my thoughts with you. Being fussy means I don’t just eat anything. So these meals will really be put to the test. I am however, really looking forward to it. The meals sound really delicious and I can’t wait to try out the smoothies. Our food arrived yesterday and we will be starting it on Monday. I will be sharing the weeks meals, my thoughts and opinions with you every Thursday. I will take a few snaps of my food, smoothies and snacks and I will try to get some of the husbands as well but no promises.
I ordered the 21 Day Challenge – No Breakfast and the husband ordered the 21 Day Challenge – 1 meal a day. He also ordered a Biltong and Nuts Snack pack. I have to be clear though. We didn’t do this to make drastic changes, go on a crazy restrictive eating plan or lose a ton of weight. I am never going to be the girl that never eats niknaks ever again. Or even pizza. That is just never going to happen. I do however want to eat healthy and eat CLEAN for most of the week so that when I do have the bit of pizza or niknaks I won’t just be adding bad onto bad. The reason why the husband ordered the 1 meal a day version is because he is obviously at work and therefore can really only eat one ‘proper’ meal a day but he does like to snack, hence the addition of the snack pack. I on the other hand, don’t really eat breakfast. Or at least I do, but closer to 10 or 11 am. My pack also comes with a lot of smoothies so I am hoping that my normal ‘breakfast’ time will be the same time as a smoothie. I do however like to eat a fairly decent lunch on zumba days because not only do I need the energy, I also then eat dinner much later than normal as well.
While going through the Fitchef site I was really impressed with the variety and different options you can choose from. It really is hard to imagine that you won’t find a package that really suits you but should that happen, you can even make up your own selection. You can literally order individual meals as well so you can make up your own package to suit your tastes. I think that is really cool. If you are unsure about what Fitchef is about I really suggest you take a look at the ‘about us‘ section on their site. I won’t lie, it’s quite inspiring. But more than that, it doesn’t sound like a punishment to eat clean and healthy. It helps to know that idea of Fitchef is born from passion. There is a ton of information, options and delicious looking photos on their site. But let me tell you about my experience so far.
From the minute I ordered, there has been constant information from Fitchef. I was notified when my order was placed, when my payment was received, when my order would be delivered (long in advance so I didn’t have to change plans last minute to accommodate) as well as the option to let them know if that day did not suit you.
The food all arrives frozen and packed in a container that will keep it cold till you can get home to repack. This is great if you need to receive your delivery at work. This is what mine looked like.
This is what a box looked like once I had opened it. You can see everything is frozen and there is a freezer pack in the box as well. The packing material is also very insulating so it would keep it cold for a while. In this particular box, the smoothies were on top and then there was a separator with the food underneath. The other 2 boxes were 1 smoothies and snacks and one food. So it did not need the separator.
This is the husbands 21 Day Challenge – 1 meal a day once it was unpacked. (I tried to fit as much as I could in the photo without showing all my counter so some is cut off)
This is my 21 Day challenge – No breakfast once it was unpacked. (Again, tried to get as much as possible but quite a bit cut off)
And this is the snack pack once it is unpacked.
I am not going to list what came in each pack. You can use the link above to go have a look at the packages on the site. I will also go through the meals and smoothies each week when I give you an update.
This is the freezer with all the food packed away. I emptied the fridge freezer to make it easier to keep some order and the freezer is FULL! Both drawers at the bottom is full of smoothies and I even had to squeeze some in the door. I don’t think anyone is going to be hungry!
I also want to take a moment to discuss the cost. I have heard a few comments that it is quite expensive. I will definitely give my opinion about if it is worth it once I have done at least a week maybe two. But worth it isn’t the same as too expensive. If I take my package (excluding snacks) each ‘meal’ works out to less than R40. (I say ‘meal’ because some might not consider a smoothie a meal but it certainly could count as one when you consider the ingredients). Now consider this. The food is clean, healthy, fresh and already prepared. So you don’t have to cook it, you don’t need to add ingredients. Healthy food is not cheap and if you add the convenience of Fitchef, I think less than R40 a meal is pretty damn good. I can spend more than that in one coffee run with a muffin. You can’t put a price on convenience. It also means you won’t need any other ‘groceries’. Ok, so that is my 2 cents about the cost. I will touch on it more as the weeks go.
So there you have it. The food has arrived, it’s in the freezer and ready for Monday. Next week Thursday I will show you some of my meals and smoothies and let you know how it’s been so far. If you really really don’t want to read about this let me know. If you have have tried Fitchef before I would also like to know. What was your experience like? Would you order again? What did you order? I am really excited to start this journey and see how it goes. What’s the worst that can happen right? Wish us luck!
Thanks for reading,
